Find a hiking paradise in the Höllental (Hell’s valley)

The name is not part of the programme for a change - on the contrary! The Höllental impresses visitors with a rich flora and fauna as well as impressive views of the Franconian forest and the Thuringian forest.

Where the devil was once angry

According to legend, a poor charburner once arose at night against the devil, who, enraged, stamped with the foot of his horse only once in anger. In this way the Höllental was created, a ravine to the left and right of the river Selbitz. In fact, it was the Selbitz that eroded the earth up to 170 metres deep over millions of years. From Bad Steben to the east, it is only about four kilometres for hikers to reach and explore the Höllenthal with its approximately 160 hectares and about 3.6 kilometres in length.

The nature reserve Höllental with the Hirschsprung

The landmark of the Höllental can already be seen from the valley: a jumping deer of wood that could only escape its hunters like this. At the viewpoints Wiedeturm and König David, looking over the treetops invites you to take a break. The Teufelssteg and Jungfernsteg stand picturesquely. In total, about 30 kilometres of hiking trails are accessible in the Höllental, of which the Höllental adventure trail is one of the most interesting. Display boards on history and geology complement the visual sensory impressions within an imposing volcanic landscape.
