In the historic old town of Bad Reichenhall, at the foot of Gruttenstein Castle, lies the old salt works (Alte Saline). As an industrial monument with an attached salt museum, it is open to visitors.

History

The salt industry has a millenary tradition in the region. During the industrial age, the production processes were perfected more and more, and even the brine line from 1816 was a technical masterpiece. After a devastating city fire in 1834, King Ludwig I had the salt works rebuilt. While salt production has now moved to the outskirts of the city, the main fountain house of the magnificent industrial building is now used for cultural purposes and is a popular tourist attraction. Alpine brine is still transferred from here to the RupertusTherme, the Gradierhaus, to the brine fountain and to the other spa facilities of the city.

The salt museum adventure

The sightseeing tour begins at the spring construction with its gigantic waterwheels, where you get fascinating insights into the tunnel system hidden away from daylight underground. Passing the salt cave with its alpine brine healing spring and the Karl Theodor pump, you make your way back up to the top of the main well shaft, where the salt museum clearly demonstrates the technical development of salt production. The brand museum also tells you everything about salt in general and about Bad Reichenhall's brand in particular. Exclusive salt products, which are ideal as souvenirs, can be purchased in the adjoining building where the salt shop is.
