Bad Kissingen applies for world heritage status

When spa towns from Czechia, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Italy and Austria compete for a UNESCO world heritage site title, then Europe as an idea takes centre stage. Nevertheless, the candidates themselves shine with individual strengths, their history, parks and beach resorts.

The UNESCO world heritage mission

The spa culture is a reference to former times. At about the turn of the 20th century, a spa treatment was something normal with many classes of society. One did not necessarily have to have an acute illness. People who generally sought relaxation, who wanted to prevent ill-health, get to know people for business or even future partners also went for treatment. Rest and relaxation are more important than ever in our modern society. Taking time off and getting away from the stress of everyday life - that is what spas are all about even today. To draw more attention to this tradition and to preserve it, Bad Kissingen has joined the venture to become a UNESCO world heritage site.

Great spas of Europe - A European idea

Uniqueness, authenticity and integrity in terms of their global significance - these criteria must be met by every applicant to receive the status of a UNESCO world heritage site. As a rule, every location, every cultural site competes on its own. However, the idea behind the application of the spa town of Bad Kissingen is a European one. Together with Bad Kissingen, Franzensbad, Karlovy Vary and Marienbad in Czechia, Baden-Baden and Bad Ems in Germany, Spa in Belgium, Montecatini Terme in Italy, Baden bei Wien in Austria, Vichy in France and Bath in Great Britain are competing for the UNESCO world cultural heritage title. These eleven resorts unite the European idea of community in one project. At the same time, special features are highlighted that promote versatility and variety within the group.

A town with the infrastructure of a big city

In order to be recognised as a spa town, the opportunity to spend a few leisurely days and weeks without stress in a spa and with nature should come first. A small town with parks, suitable structures of buildings, cultural monuments and, generally speaking, more walking and biking trails than wide roads are ideal for relaxation. If the place still offers individual characteristics such as spa music, healing springs and, for example, an interesting saga treasure, all the necessary prerequisites for granting the status of UNESCO world cultural heritage are there.

Bad Kissingen as a European spa town

Bad Kissingen is well-known, loved and famous for its spa culture far beyond the borders of Lower Franconia. The health resort's unique feature is its rose garden at the regent building, which invites you to take leisurely walks, especially during the summer months. Tradition is celebrated in Bad Kissingen, but this takes place according to modern standards: technical developments are always up to date without destroying the overall appearance of the contemplative spa town. Promenade pathways are well developed, and the green, rural surroundings are not far away. The positive decision to apply as a UNESCO world heritage site would mean international attention for Bad Kissingen - but above all in cooperation with the ten other applicants as promoters of the European idea.
