The upper part of the town: a jewel untouched by fire
Saint Florian is the patron saint of the fire brigade. However, he also helped the ordinary citizens of Florianiplatz during the city fire of 1843. The fire raged everywhere else, but Florianiplatz was spared. Thanks to what happened, this square with its historical houses with medieval flair is still well preserved. The house facades of the gabled houses are painted yellow, light blue and pink; some have extensive illustrations. Shutters and muntin windows complete the picture of an idyllic village square in the middle of the alpine town.

Far away from dull consumption in the big cities, visitors can experience Bad Reichenhall's traditional craftsmanship at Florianiplatz with the Sebastianiviertel up close. The historic old town is not called the artist's quarter for nothing. Here you can look over the shoulders of painters in their studios, potters in their workshops, weavers, artisans and flower-makers and buy one or two beautiful pieces. Very close to the old fortifications of the 13th century with the city wall, powder tower and Gruttenstein Castle, the spirit of the past becomes especially noticeable at Easter and when the maypole has been put up.
